My literacy experience throughout school.

I see a lot of differences when it comes to school and literacy from now, being an educator to years ago when I was actually the student inside of the classroom. My literacy experiences throughout the grades 6-12 were not very good. My comprehension and reading skills have always been above average because my mom would work with me at home at a young age. As far as school, I don't think that I've really had a teacher that made reading fun and interesting. As good as I was at it, reading has always been boring and impassive. I was in GT (Gifted and Talented) classes and I feel as if that was a reason why reading was not engaging. We were expected to already know the text as we rea such as vocabulary comprehension, settings and book comprehension. We really didn't have classroom discussions about the books.

On the topic of books, I really don't remember any books that impacted me. We didn't really read any diverse books that grabbed my attention. I think it's very important to cater to all students interests in reading so that they are able to enjoy it. It doesn't matter how smart a child s or how good they can read, I think it's still very vital to incorporate diversity, discussions and altered instructional engagement in the classroom to keep students interested.

My past experiences of being a student in the classroom, made me know what type of teacher I wanted to be. Fast forwarding to now as an ELA/Writing teacher I make it my mission to tailor the lesson to all my students different levels and needs. It doesn't matter if a student is high or low. Classroom culture is important, I make sure we have daily reflections over the chapters and books that we read. Beforehand , I go over vocabulary for better book and reading comprehension. It is important to let students have classroom discussions about open ended questions so that students are able to give their opinions, arguments and views about the instruction and lesson. Students being able to create and understanding that their opinion matters.
