My literacy experience throughout school.

     I see a lot of differences when it comes to school and literacy from now, being an educator to years ago when I was actually the student inside of the classroom. My literacy experiences throughout the grades 6-12 were not very good. My comprehension and reading skills have always been above average because my mom would work with me at home at a young age. As far as school, I don't think that I've really had a teacher that made reading fun and interesting. As good as I was at it, reading has always been boring and impassive. I was in GT (Gifted and Talented) classes and I feel as if that was a reason why reading was not engaging. We were expected to already know the text as we rea such as vocabulary comprehension, settings and book comprehension. We really didn't have classroom discussions about the books.      On the topic of books, I really don't remember any books that impacted me. RESILIENT

     Able to withstand, recover or bounce back quickly when you are facing something or going through a rough patch. RESILIENT! Not only my word for the semester but this powerful word explains who I am and what I stand for to the core. It's literally tattooed on my left forearm. It's there for me to look at and remind myself that I'm built for this, day in and day out.      Being resilient comes within, it's like being bulletproof. You don't let things affect you or you don't show weakness very easily. You work and live through grace and faith. Resilient relates in literacy in multiple ways. As an ELA/Writing teacher, resilient can have several meanings. I work with students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and I preach to them everyday that, I know in fact that you despise and dislike reading but I will make it relatable and fun, I just need you to meet me halfway. I give them tough love and they give me effort in return. I want my students to know that...
